Technicals

ACM Analyst team along with ACM/GFI provides technical analysis on oil and gas physical freight and freight derivative markets. The team produces regular market forecast and other sector-specific studies for oil tanker and gas carrier markets by maintaining a database on tanker fixtures, freight rate assessments, vessel movements, vessel specifications, new buildings on order and demolitions.

Forward Flat Rate Modelling
We believe we have developed an industry standard for forecasting and modelling world scale flat rates which allow FFA participants to more accurately look at both wet freight historical and, forward curve data in USD/tonne and USD/day. The research team also works closely with other ACM/GFI specialists to develop deals for owners and charterers looking to manage exposure to the spot market.

ACM/GFI wet FFA data is available through Bloomberg. View indicative bid-offer prices for the 6 most liquid wet freight routes on a public access page updated 3 times a day during London trading hours. Bloomberg (symbol AGWF).

Dry FFA Technicals
Whilst FFAs remain a product predominantly used by those with direct exposure to the freight market, in recent times we have seen the entry of a greater number of financial institutions. Consequently there has been an increased need for brokerage houses to offer alternative trading strategies to straight physical hedging. GFI's Dry FFA desk produces a bi-monthly technical analysis report which supplies market commentary with its genesis in the historical data.

Technicals as an alternative trading strategy:

  • Moving Average models
  • Freight correlations and divergence trading
  • Relative value in the dry freight markets
  • Dry freight volatility analysis
  • Judging the market price of options

Trend following in the dry freight markets::

  • Shipping markets tend to develop strong trends
  • Looking at trading tools that attempt to identify and capture those trends that have performed very well.
  • Relative value in the dry freight markets
  • Dry freight volatility analysis
  • Even the most basic tools can significantly improve performance by giving support/resistance levels.
